Lamp Heaven: Reviving Lithuanian Tradition in Modern Design

A Modern Twist on Traditional Lithuanian Straw Gardens

Among Lithuanian Pagans, there was a tradition of creating intricate art pieces known as Straw Gardens. These charming creations were believed to bring harmony and peace to the home. Unfortunately, this tradition has slowly faded over time. Designer Milda Vystartiene seeks to revive this beautiful art form with her innovative lamp design, Lamp Heaven.

Lamp Heaven stands out from other lamps with its unique frame that emits light itself. Made from plated stainless steel tubes, chain, and beads, the lamp features flexible LED wires arranged within organic glass tubes. This design allows for easy assembly, making it possible to sell and package the lamp in parts.

The main dimensions of Lamp Heaven are 600mm in width, 600mm in depth, and 250mm in height. Its geometric shape and use of organic materials give it a modern and minimalist look that can complement a variety of interior styles.

The interaction with Lamp Heaven is an essential part of the design. The lamp is meant to be assembled by hand, encouraging people to reconnect with traditional craftsmanship. Each owner of Lamp Heaven is provided with instructions on how to collect and assemble the lamp. Additionally, the lamp can be customized into various forms and shapes, allowing individuals to create their own unique design.

The inspiration for Lamp Heaven came to Milda Vystartiene in the summer of 2015 in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The project officially started in September 2017 and is still ongoing. As part of her Master's degree studies, Vystartiene researched Lithuanian folk art Straw Gardens and aimed to adapt this tradition to modern life.

One of the main challenges in creating Lamp Heaven was finding the right balance between complexity and simplicity. The lamp needed to retain the essence of the traditional Straw Gardens while also fitting into contemporary interior design. Additionally, working with the intricate wiring required collaboration with an expert in electricity to ensure the lamp could be easily assembled at home.

Lamp Heaven is not only a unique lighting fixture but also a symbol of cultural heritage and craftsmanship. By reviving the tradition of Lithuanian Straw Gardens, Milda Vystartiene brings warmth and a touch of history to modern homes. The lamp's flat-packed, eco-friendly packaging makes it easy to transport and aligns with sustainable design principles.

Lamp Heaven was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes the lamp's well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities that meet professional and industrial standards. Lamp Heaven's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
